Do you remember this scene from The Joy Luck Club? The little girl Waverly has been featured on the cover of Life Magazine as a chess prodigy. Her mother drags Waverly through the streets while marketing, holding the issue of Life on display in front of her, telling everyone around her, “This is my daughter. Chess champion!” Though my mother lives in another city, and so can’t drag me by the hand through the marketplace, since last week, she’s been carrying around the November 28, 2011 issue of People Magazine, boldly open to page 77, declaring to everyone, “This is my daughter! Author of The Sisters.”
